[ while he could deliver it in person, callisto decides not to.
instead, he simply leaves a gift for her to return to. the gift will have a letter, which is equally as decorated as the box that contains a present for her. the letter will read: ]
Rover,
This may be the first of which I have ever titled a letter so simply and without pretense. Regardless, I heard this was a season that was highly celebrated amongst those of this world. One walk outside of the base and it is easy to see the impact its made on the citizens. While I do think it's strange to be placing stock into a world I have yet to fully grasp, I do think there are several reasons to genuinely celebrate.
As for what those reasons are, it would be no fun if I had told you plainly, correct?
While this is no enchanted amulet, it is the first of several gifts you will receive. I guarantee it. As a emperor is always flawless, an emperor to be also doesn't spread any hint of falsehood.
- Callisto Regulus
[ while this likely curses me to comic sans, when rover opens the box itself, she will find a hair accessory - it looks similar to the ribbon she wears but it's of fine material and has a subtle design woven into it with sparkly thread and a gem the color of his eyes at the center of it. ]
[ the first of several gifts to receive, and the insistence that he will deliver, seems like a threat to rover. she also just ... wouldn't know what to do with too many gifts? she feels like one is enough, but also, how many can callisto truly give?
so she wears the ribbon. her hair is long enough again to do it properly. callisto receives a picture of her wearing it. it suits her.
in return: he gets a brown cow. a sweet brown cow. the cow tumbles comically from her chonky mechanical bird in delivery. it is a very plain toy that can probably fit in the palm of his hand - a stressball of a brown cow that makes a plaintive little 'moo' sound when squished. it seems rather plain! unbefitting of a noble, much less an emperor, much less an emperor-to-be! what is going on ...? ]
I, too, would like to remain steadfast in my gift-giving.
For every gift from you I receive, you will receive a photo of myself utilizing the gift and a corresponding cow. I am here to boost Sir Strawberry's retinue so he can become a Lord.
[ clearly, there is no real limit in sight. except, there probably is in neo tokyo, if just because he's held back by his debts. does he even realize he has them? forever a mystery. regardless, he also shares a photo of the cow on his desk, which appears devoid of anything aside from parchment to write on, and other similar materials.
there will also be another gift at her door.
this time it's a nice pair of gloves. ]
Do you not believe Sir Strawberry may be demoted at this rate? The more cows under his order, the more likely he may be outshined. I can already hear his complaints.
[ is that how it works?
well, who knows how much more mileage this stress ball of a brown cow will actually end up yielding. except, maybe not much at all, if just because callisto's ire could not so easily be done away with. granted, there hasn't been a lot of reason since transylvania for him to express such emotions. ]
Why would he be demoted? I am giving him resources he can't otherwise procure for himself.
[ another pair! she wears them as well. sends to him a very nice view of her hands, looking very demure on a desk.
in exchange, he gets another delivery of two cows. both moo in different tones, one in a more baritone than the other. they have different colours, one black and white, the other, a plain reddish-brown. they are to join their brethren as well. ]
[ the cows are swiftly multiplying, and he has to wonder why they're here physically when they could have just as easily been in the pastures of their shared game file. that said, he does have another gift for her. this time it's a simple shawl, but it's clear the materials used are rather luxurious.
he figures it would help to keep her warm. all the more when he knows that her usual state of dress... well, that wasn't of present concern. at least not now. instead he's focused on finding another spot for them cows on his desk. ]
Have you not heard of scarcity? Now that there have been an increase in cows, his value has plummeted. That said, would you like to hear something curious?
I have heard amongst the common man that providing a dowry in the form of cows was relatively common. Had I known that was your aim all along, I would have said that there was nothing I am lacking in. If you truly wish to reward me, do you not believe there is something else you could be offering me?
I propose Sir Strawberry keep his rank, but only at the cost of your time.
I propose Sir Strawberry keep his rank regardless, because he's been a good cow. Such goodness is rare in this world. The increase in cows show that he is worthy of being their leader. He is a good model for them.
Now come over here and make your demands in person.
[ the shawl is too warm to be wrapped around her, so she folds it neatly along with the other gifts that he's given her. it became obvious where the cows are coming from: it seems that rover has an entire bag full of them in different colours, just a little away from the frame. ]
[ is he just the tiniest bit disappointed she doesn't seem to delve too deeply into his mention of a dowry and all its implications? either way, he doesn't show a hint of it in his response back if just because he's more focused on the last sentence. ]
They do say that men are rather useless without proper leadership. Without those in power, the lands become lawless and the people all the more vicious. ... Sir Strawberry will have to do his best to fulfill that role. If he fails, he would only have his patron to blame.
Speaking of his patron, it sounds a lot to me as if they may be desiring to see me right at this moment? Well, what do you think? Is there truth to my assumptions?
